Kofi Awoonor was born in 1944 in Accra, Ghana. He studied at Achimota School and later at the University College of the Gold Coast (later the University of Ghana), where he obtained a degree in philosophy. He served as a Ghanaian diplomat, and then taught philosophy at the University of Ghana and the Institute of Education, University of London. In 1994, he was appointed Ambassador to Sweden; after five years in Sweden, he became a member of the National Assembly of Ghana
In November 2009 he was appointed to the position of Minister for Foreign Affairs by President John Kufuor, a post he held until 2013. During his tenure as foreign minister, he worked to improve diplomatic relations with Africa's emerging democracies and developed an African Free Trade Agreement to promote economic development throughout Africa. In addition to his work in Ghana, he is a Trustee for Chatham House in London and a member of the International Academic Advisory Council for Georgetown University's Institute for African Studies.
